The settlement of Kostobe is located east of the village of Sarykemer on the right bank of the Talas River, on a floodplain terrace. The settlement is identified with the city of Dzhamukat (Khamukat), founded in the 6th century by Bukharian Sogdians who migrated to Turkestan.
